On Friday, 21 February 2025, the UN Movie Society of the United Nations Staff Recreation Council - dedicated to advancing UN global causes through the transformative power of storytelling, will present an event featuring excerpts from the 2025 Oscar-shortlisted International Feature Film, FROM GROUND ZERO. The programme will be broadcasted live & on demand on the global channels of the United Nations - UN Web TV and UN YouTube.

FROM GROUND ZERO was filmed during the devastating war in Gaza, during which – according to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) - over 48,000 Palestinians have been reportedly killed since October 7th, 2023 - the vast majority of them children, women and the elderly. And many more are feared missing under the rubble. Sadly, 273 UNRWA colleagues have also been killed since the war began.

In under two hours, the film weaves together 22 short films created by 22 courageous Palestinian filmmakers living and surviving in Gaza over this past year. While pulling from the rubble of their homes and their cities, these filmmakers have come together to share these stories with us – mixing dramatic storytelling, documentary, and animation. FROM GROUND ZERO is a moving and compelling story about resilience and the human spirit. The very existence of this film is remarkable, given the dangerous circumstances that existed on the ground at the time of filming. It is a portrayal of resilience and the human spirit that explores the importance of storytelling in a powerful way.

On this occasion, the event will be opened with remarks delivered by H.E. Mr. Riyad H. Mansour, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations. In addition, remarks by Director Rashid Masharawi will be featured.

In 2017, during my exchange at the University of Montreal, I met Echo in a documentary class. At the time, she had already been studying film in Canada for over a year since moving from France and was gradually adapting to Quebec’s weather. Since I was only there for one semester, I was fortunate to have her as a friend—thanks to her, I got to explore the natural beauty of the "Maple Leaf Country." Before I left Montreal, she kindly took me in and even made hotpot for me. Though it was just a semester, it was clear that she was an independent and determined person.

In the years that followed, we were both busy with our studies and careers in different countries, and we rarely kept in touch. Seven years later, when I had the opportunity to return to Montreal for a short program, Echo told me that she had moved from Quebec to Ontario and was now working as a visual effects artist. As fate would have it, just before I left Canada again, she and her partner warmly hosted me.

Though it was only a brief two-day visit, I felt like I had stepped into another world, experiencing their life and exchanging stories of the past years. In a fleeting moment, I realized that seven years had passed in the blink of an eye. As they saw me off, I jokingly said, “See you in another seven years.” Back then, we were both studying film, but now, we’ve each taken different paths. Well, that’s okay—after all, life is what matters most.

Anne ve babasını doğduğu gün kaybeden Fatma’nın öz amcası Recep bebeğin dünyaya gelmesini istemez. Fatma’ya şiddet uygulayarak bebeğin düşmesini sağlar. Fatma bebeğini kaybetmenin acısıyla Ebesi Songül’den yardım ister. Ebe Songül her ne kadar bunu istemese de fatmanın üzüntüsü ve ısrarına dayanamayıp Hüddam daveti ile yaptığı büyü sonucunda bebeği hayata geri getirmeyi başarır, bu bebek Fatma’yı hayata yeniden bağlayıp ona eziyet edenlerin kabusu olacaktır.

ZECCAC, evlilik sonrası karanlık bir varlık tarafından musallat edilen Yaren’in hikayesini anlatıyor. Öğretmenlik yaptığı küçük kasabada hayatını Burak’la birleştirmek isteyen Yaren, en yakın arkadaşı Aysel’in kaybolmasıyla sarsılır.
